About the Artist
Dale Boyer is a San Diego based multidisciplinary artist with a strong connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. From streets lined with iridescent broken glass in East Oakland to the raw wooden craftsmanship found in many San Francisco neighborhoods, Dale finds inspiration in his everyday life. His artwork includes abstract paintings, decorative finishes, and installations.
Dale’s artwork is a re-expression of the color and textural arrangements we see in our everyday lives. The oxidized patina of an old lamp post, rust from a car neglected left too many years in the rain, marble polished to perfection; all are inspirations for Dale’s works. He is a self-taught artist who draws inspiration from the interplay between texture, color, and light; developed layer upon layer through different mediums.
The context of Dale’s art is paramount in his style because he pieces together so many references. Dale may choose a palette based on the colors found on a weathered car, but match the texture to the floor of his workspace or the walls of his studio entryway. Combining elements from two entirely different sources creates a unique and captivating juxtaposition.
Dale begins a new piece by applying thick layers of heavy bodied material - acrylic and plaster are among his top choices. Application tools and methods are chosen based on compatibility with the project at hand. After sculpting the body of a painting, Dale begins coloring in a freestyle motion with varying levels of opacity. Creating a work emotive of patina on metal requires patience and detail. The complexity of an object that has formed over many years is more than can be appreciated at first glance, and Dale's work expresses this with uncanny similitude.
